FORMER CARAUSTAR - RITTMAN PAPERBOARD | Site Remediation and Development | Rittman, OH
When the former Caraustar - Rittman Paperboard facility was operating at its peak, the plant was home to more than 1,200 local employees. Its closing in 2006 resulted in the loss of these jobs and left behind 300 acres of vacant real estate in the industrial core of Rittman, Ohio.
Hull is currently working closely with the City of Rittman to redevelop the site for industrial and commercial use. In April 2013, Urban Renewables II, LLC (URII), a special purpose entity established by Hull, took title to this site to begin preparing the property for redevelopment. As part of revitalizing the site for new economic uses, URII is exploring opportunities with JobsOhio to help support redevelopment of the site as an industrial park.
Demolition of nearly 800,000 square feet of former Caraustar manufacturing buildings on South Industrial Avenue in Rittman began in late 2013, paving the way for new industrial and commercial redevelopment at the long-idled former paperboard plant. Hull was responsible for overseeing both the demolition and remediation work at the site, which was completed in the summer of 2014. Where possible, scrap materials and asphalt were recycled as part of the project, with concrete crushed and used as backfill on-site. More than 85 percent of the materials on-site were recycled as part of the overall redevelopment.
Hull is also responsible for performing closure of a residual waste landfill on-site, and a complex of wastewater treatment lagoons used to manage waste materials from the paper-making process.
